John King sitting in again.  Having trouble with my audio, so no videos today.  Sorry.  In fact, the whole entry is rather skint.  Not a great deal to talk about, I guess.

Keeping them Honest – Drew Griffin

John King was at the Big Wall within 1 minute of the show opening.  He was talking about the tsunami that recently hit American Samoa.

American Samoa

Despite the warning system that was ostensibly in place, to the tune of 13 million since 2003, the residents of American Samoa had no advance warning of the tsunami that hit in September, 2009.

Some of the money, it seems, was spent on plasma screen televisions and leather chairs.  One word to the US govt: oversight.

Watch the money pile up

Raw Politics – James Carville and Kevin Madden

At the wall again

John King was back at the wall talking about campaign funding for governor’s races in New Jersey and Virginia.

King asked Carville whether or not he thinks this governor’s race will be a referendum on President Obama.  Madden thinks that this election will give some ideas about what the Republicans can look forward to in 2010 and 2012.

All three

King is certainly more direct than AC.  He pauses less frequently.  He sounds more scripted.

H1N1 – Digging Deeper – Erica Hill and Sanjay Gupta

Some schools in the US are reporting double-digit infections.  The first children have received their H1N1 vaccination.  Sanjay talked a bit about swine flu symptoms (which he should be good at since he got it).  Hill posited whether or not it would be better to let children develop a natural immunity by catching the disease, a la chickenpox.  Gupta demurred.  Tamiflu can be given to children if mixed in water or  some sort of cherry syrup.

Crime and Punishment – Dan Simon

In Northern California, a teenaged girl was gangraped for 2.5 hours after a homecoming dance.  At least 15 people watched, and nobody reported.  This is just as sad as Derion Albert.  Charles Ramsey, a member of the school board, couldn’t speak to the reasons behind this tragedy.

The girl left the gym to get picked up by her father.  She was intercepted by a friend who led her to an alley, where friends greeted them with alcohol.  The alley was not monitored and there aren’t any cameras there.  Police have arrested the 15-year-old boy who led the girl into the alley.

The victim was hospitalized with non-life-threatening in juries.  John King has it right: the stomach just turns.

Where she was attacked

digging a bit deeper

I put that in little letters because they brought Steve Perry on.  I can’t stand this dude.  He carps and whines, but has nothing of substance to contribute to the show or possibly the universe.

Mary Koss, a professor at the University of Arizona, spoke on the bystander effect, which is when people watch a tragedy unfold without doing anything about it.  Nobody has said anything about Derrion Albert yet.  Maybe we’ve already forgotten.  No, Perry brought it up.  He needs to buy  a razor

360 Follow – Gary Tuchman

The family of the victim of the sweat lodge tragedy are trying to bring James Arthur Ray to justice.  They haven’t even had the chance to talk to “his people.”  Ray hasn’t even told the family that he’s sorry, but he put an apologetic note on his Facebook page, so it must be all good.

Gupta came on to explain the death.  Our organs, he said, need a great deal of oxygenated blood.  The conditions in the sweat lodge make achieving this difficult.
